Don't Forget to Breathe

Don’t Forget to Breathe

 |  by Kevin English

It’s surprising how many musicians forget the most basic principles of life. We consume Diet Coke, Red Bull and coffee when we should be drinking something more replenishing and frugal…like water.  It’s also become common place for us to unconsciously ask for “French” fries instead of green, leafy uncooked vegetables.

Why is that?

Reasons (or shall I say excuses) may range from the big business monopoly on our minds to the lack of time or money to cook a well balanced, nutritional meal.

The one thing that there is absolutely no explanation for is forgetting to breathe. How many times have you been at home, in the studio or even around friends and subconsciously forgot to breathe? I’m not talking about the short shallow breaths that have kept you alive all of these years.

Instead I challenge you to think of the last time you took a deep breath, from your diaphragm and into your back. You know… the type of breath where you can actually hear the stream of cool fresh air entering and exiting your nose and mouth.

If you can’t remember the last time you’ve focused on your breathing, do it now…and tell me how good you feel.

However busy you get writing, recording, promoting and distributing your latest record don’t forget to breathe people. Nothing fancy, just breathe.

  1. Good comment. To focus on your breathing, count your breathing. Count in 1-4 and out 1-6
This automatically takes you out of your stress situation and puts you in touch with you. Exhalation is a relaxing action. The largest nerve in your body, the vagus nerve, sends a message to your chest and other muscles to relax. Therefore to longer your exhale the longer your relaxation mode. This breathing also sends a message to your limbic system that you are not facing a tiger.

  2. Agreed. I often feel as if I'm holding my breath…waiting for something bad
to happen. Hopefully there aren't any tigers around.

    Cheers!

    Kevin
