Good comment. To focus on your breathing, count your breathing. Count in 1-4 and out 1-6
This automatically takes you out of your stress situation and puts you in touch with you. Exhalation is a relaxing action. The largest nerve in your body, the vagus nerve, sends a message to your chest and other muscles to relax. Therefore to longer your exhale the longer your relaxation mode. This breathing also sends a message to your limbic system that you are not facing a tiger.
Agreed. I often feel as if I'm holding my breath…waiting for something bad
to happen. Hopefully there aren't any tigers around.
